Project - Tank Decommissioning & Removal
This extensive project involved the removal of numerous oil and fuel storage tanks within the site hat was being prepared for the London 2012 Olympics.
The Scope of Works included the cleaning, degassing and removal of the following tanks:
- 1 No. 25,000 litre above ground oil storage tank from the BOC Gases depot.
- 6 No. above ground storage tanks in various sizes ranging from 2,700 litre to 24,000 litre from the Pentaluck and East Cross areas.
- Decommissioning of the Total Service Station, consisting of the breaking over, cleaning, degassing and excavation of 4 No. below ground petroleum sprit tanks, totalling 110,000-litres.
- Once the project environmental consultants confirmed the ground was free of hydro -carbon contamination, the excavated tank farm was back filled with certificated Type 1 re-cycled crushed concrete, in readiness for future development.
- A further 19 storage tanks of varying in sizes were removed and disposed of from site, within the Stage Coach and Bus Depot areas.
Conclusion – The entire site contained a large range of storage tanks and vessels containing an extensive variety of chemicals and fuels, all of which required decommissioning and disposal. The site was handed back to the client with an Environmental clean bill of health, contaminant free and in readiness for redevelopment for the London Olympics.

Client - Selfridges London
Project - Forecourt decommissioning
Following many years of trading, the forecourt to the rear of Selfridges closed down due to being uneconomically viable. The client, Selfridges Department Store, required the forecourt decommissioning and the under ground fuel storage tanks to be removed.
Works were carried out adjacent to busy London streets, so health and safety was of paramount importance.
The scope of works included:
- Removal of the forecourt canopy by hand due to the restricted working area
- Cleaning and degassing of the vessels, making them safe to commence their removal from the concrete tank room within the basement car park
- Installation of a specifically designed crash deck in the basement, which reduced the noise from falling materials, while providing a safe working platform for operatives
- An engineered steel beam propping system was installed to provide structural support to the road way and property
- A 13-tonne excavator was lowered into the basement to breakout the concrete tank surrounds
KpH’s professional and highly experienced team will provide a solution to meet the requirements of any situation and/or client, safely removing a wide variety of tank contents, including hydro-carbons, flammables, chemicals and acids.
