Case Study 1 ⬍

Client - Ansell UK Ltd
Project - Manufacturing plant dismantling and removal and environmental cleaning

The strip out for Ansell UK Ltd required extensive removal of manufacturing plant and chemical storage facilities. Decades of production processes, using chemicals and acids, had caused areas of the building to be impregnated with toxic residues. Contaminated areas required structural block work and walls to be removed and reinstated. The building contained varying degrees of hazardous materials, ranging from acids that required neutralising and disposing of, to solvent storage tanks, which were removed. The project concluded with an extensive environmental clean of the entire building.

The scope of works included:

  • Decommission, dismantling and removal of extensive manufacturing plant
  • Removal of flock from walls and ceilings
  • Removal and disposal of chemicals from storage areas
  • Chemical storage tank cleaning and removal from site
  • Repairs to the factory included roof areas and walls following removal of pipe work and flues which exited the factory
  • Removal of mezzanine floors Environmental cleansing of the entire factory

The site was handed back to the client on completion of works, which were overseen by the Environment Agency. This resulted in the client obtaining Environment Agency approval for the surrender of its waste licence, allowing the site’s change of operational use for the future.

Client - G E Lighting, Enfield Manufacturing Plant
Project – Tank Removal & Contaminated Land Remediation

G E Lighting appointed KpH to investigate and report on the contents of 4 No. below ground fuel storage tanks and the extent of contamination to surrounding land. Initial works along side Environmental Consultants involved the digging of trail pits for soil samples to be collected and the breaking over of the tanks, which confirmed they had previously been decommissioned with concrete slurry fill.

Following analysis and the subsequent released of the Environmental survey report the client instructed KpH to remove the tanks and heavily contaminated spoil from within the tank farm. On removal of the tanks it was revealed the tanks had been poorly decommissioned as large pockets of fuel product and water were discovered within the tanks.

Cold cutting techniques were used and the deployment of vacuum tankers to remove the hazardous liquid pockets. The tanks and their contaminated concrete contents were removed and disposed of under Environment Agency consignment note to a licensed waste disposal facility, together with the identified contaminated spoil.

The client was particularly impressed with the pro-active, swift and professional service provided by KpH, which has resulted in an excellent working partnership to remediate other sites.

KpH has the industry experience to offer a suite of remedial services including environmental cleansing, installation of in-situ remedial systems, barrier trench construction and pipe work installation, which with our combined de-contamination experience allow KpH the flexibility to give clients a comprehensive cleaning and remedial service.

Having worked with some of the UK’s leading environmental companies and consultants, KpH understands the importance of delivering a highly professional and courteous site presence that meets the standards of all project parties. KpH’s investment in training and developing competent, personable staff helps cement the company’s reputation as a quality contractor and preferred supply chain partner.

KpH holds the Environmental BSI 14001 ISO accreditation, of which sustainability is a key factor, demonstrated by the effective recycling of hazardous and inert waste materials at every opportunity. This is carried out in an environmentally safe manner meeting stringent Government and Environment Agency waste management legislation.

Previous Projects

This contract under taken for Halcrow at the Old Britannica Zinc Refinery in Avonmouth, included the specialist cleaning and waste disposal of hazardous waste from an underground sump system. The cleaning process involved a trained confined spaces team to man enter the sump system to jet wash and decontaminate the surfaces.

Disposal of the waste washings and sludge contaminated with Zinc, Mercury and hydrocarbons, which had built up for decades was pumped on board a specialist road tanker and disposed of to a licensed waste disposal facility.
